Sinji Characters
Characters play an important role in human life and serve as an essential means in the development of science and culture. The Korean ancestors invented and used their own national characters for the first time in the East.
They founded Ancient Joson, the first state in the Korean history, in the early 30th century B.C. and created the developed national civilization with Pyongyang as the centre. Sinji characters were invented in the course.

"Nyongbyonji" and other historical documents gave an account of the ancient "Sinji characters" along with their entities.
"Nyongbyonji" is a book on the history of the Nyongbyon area in North Phyongan Province.
Doctor and Associate Professor An Kyong Sang, Section Chief of the Linguistics Institute under the Academy of Social Sciences, said "Nyongbyonji" contains 16 Sinji characters and continued:
"The earthenware unearthed in tombs of Ancient Joson is also inscribed with characters which are the same as Sinji characters in 'Nyongbyonji' or similar to them. This means that Sinji characters were certainly used in the society of Ancient Joson and there were more characters than those 16 ones in 'Nyongbyonji'."
Due to the limited data on Sinji characters, their number and system, the sound value of each character and the norms of usage have not been clarified all yet. But the characteristics of their structures show that they are syllabic characters and written downward.
Sinji characters are not only of historic significance in the development of history and culture of Korea but also of epochal significance in the history of characters of the East and the world.
