New strains of winter wheat bred and introduced
Researchers of the institute studied many data on advanced science and technology so as to breed the strains of wheat suited to the regional characteristics and, on this basis, made indoor and field experiments in the highlands. They also bred a high-yielding winter wheat with strong resistance to cold and high rate of regeneration, which makes it possible to reduce the cost of agrochemicals for wheat cultivation by half in cooperation with researchers of the Pyongyang University of Agriculture. In addition, they established methods to cultivate the winter wheat safely in the province and the northern highlands throughout the country.
Many fields of farms on the plateau in Ryanggang Province were successfully sown with the new strains of winter wheat between late August and mid-September.
