Sixth Gold Medals

These are candy sculptural works created by cooks of the Chongnyu Restaurant, one of the famous restaurants in Pyongyang.
They were highly estimated at the Sixth Confectionery Sculpture Exhibition held in April. "All Birds Flock Together" and "The Sea", in particular, were completed so wonderfully that they look like fine art pieces.

These two sculptural works were made by sticking candy sculptures of light colours on the ground before putting transparent cloth on them and then sticking candy sculptures of bright colours on it to give a three-dimensional effect. They enjoyed popularity for their original ideas and lifelike representation.
The cooks won the 6th gold medals in the exhibition.

Cook Sin Hye Sun said she had known about candy sculpture to some extent but she made it for the first time when she was preparing for the first exhibition 10 years ago. She went on to say:
"We thought we could make candy sculptures quite well. But we found it very difficult to make them because of the characteristics of the materials.
In order to make a chrysanthemum, we had to make more than 100 thin petals and stick them one by one. It was really an exacting work.
When we completed our first work at last, we were very happy as we made it by ourselves."
In every exhibition, they changed the composition and methods of depiction of the candy sculptural works while attaching importance to minimizing their cost by using ordinary sugar and, at the same time, to making them look as if they were made of isomalt.
It was not at all easy to make raw materials of candy sculptures on their own while doing their job and looking after their families.
Cook Sin Hye Sun, however, took the task upon herself and made painstaking efforts to theoretically systematize the method of scientizing candy sculpture based on a new technique of mixing materials. And she applied the sprinkling method, a technique of representation of Korean jewel painting, to candy sculpture, making a new progress in creating candy sculptures. She said:
"I've been working in the public service sector for over 40 years. Whenever I felt exhausted, I always thought I am a servant of the people and it is very worthwhile and honorable to serve the people.
Making candy sculptures is also difficult. But we were very pleased to see the people enjoy the candy sculptures we made."
The pride of serving the people was the secret of winning the 6th gold medals.
