Dream in the New Year
Jo Chon Ryong will greet his 17th birthday this year. His dream is to become a world-famous boxer.
He is learning boxing at the club of the Pongji Senior Middle School in Phyongchon District of Pyongyang Municipality.
During his primary school days, he was clever and had a bent for literature. So he received Our Classroom Literature Prize. His parents wanted their only son to become a literary man.
Chon Ryong, however, preferred boxing when he entered the senior middle school.
His parents could not but support their son who was resolved to become an ace boxer and honour the country.
Teacher of the boxing club Ri Chun Gwang made strenuous efforts to teach special techniques to left-handed Chon Ryong. At the same time, he tried to remedy the boy's fatal shortcoming--inflexibility.
In order to master the clean hit movements, Chon Ryong trained individually after collective training and practised them before the mirror at home.
His techniques improved rapidly thanks to his tireless efforts and enthusiasm and amid the expectation and concern of all.
Ri Chun Gwang said Chon Ryong fully displayed his ability in the boxing of the 2024 National Games of Schoolchildren.
"He knocked out his rival with left upper-cut, his forte, in the first round of the semifinals of the 52-kilogram event to the surprise of the spectators. In the finals, too, he learned from his opponent's tactics quickly and fought him in a technical way, thus taking the first place.
In the games, he received a gold medal and the April 18 Best Player Award which is conferred to excellent students by the Socialist Patriotic Youth League."
Jo Chon Ryong will train hard in the New Year, too, to realize his dream.
