Islet Village Face-Lifted

Hadan-ri in the city of Sinuiju of North Phyongan Province is situated on Wihwa Islet in the Amnok River flowing through the northern border area of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. At night the village is brilliantly illuminated in the section of nearly four kilometres along the bank of the river.
The area resembling a city was under water by flood in late July last year.
What was seen in the vast inundated area was the ends of poles standing here and there and housetops only with rafters.
But the area was face-lifted only in more than 130 days and people came to lead a new life.
The local people were provided with new houses free of charge, which were fully furnished with TV set, furniture and other daily necessaries.

Wherever we went, we could hear them boast of their new houses.
A family received a letter from a son serving in the army that he does not know how to find his house when he comes back home after demobilization. Another family said new houses were provided to five brothers who were born in Hadan-ri. Another family also said they were provided with a new house and their son entered Kim Chaek University of Technology at the same time.
The local people said with great excitement that they are enjoying all blessings under the care of the Workers' Party of Korea.
A general greenhouse farm will be built on Wihwa Islet this year.
And there will be built a modern vegetable science institute as a base of scientific and technological research and dissemination for putting the greenhouse vegetable production on a scientific, intensive and industrial basis, greenhouses for experimental cultivation, new houses and public service amenities.
In the future, the islet area will be turned into a model farm with development potentials.
